Rumor Alert: PSP2 will have no UMD Drive

February 26th, 2009

The UMD is finally about to bite the dust, according to David Perry of Shiny Entertainment. In a twitter update, Perry said “Sony finally removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive”. Of course, this hasn’t been confirmed by Sony so place it under the rumor category for now. In related developments, the PSP2 is indeed real according to Perry once again. He states that a developer he knows is currently working on it right now, which leads us to believe that prototypes are already available.

“I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now. I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me.”

Sony is likely to release games for the PSP2 on Memory Sticks, and of course via the PlayStation Network. As some PSP titles are already on the PSN, backwards compatibility is likely to be included, though you won’t be able to play UMD games if the No UMD drive rumor proves true.

For someone like me this means the system won’t support games and is to be used for media only. I’ve no interest in paying money and not receive the goods, and as Sony will never lower their DRM to what I consider usable then I simply won’t consider it.
