Can I convert my own movies and play them on the PSP? Yes, there are many programs available that will convert video files to a PSP compatible format. Playback time depends on which version of the memory stick you have (32 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB) and the bitrate that you encode the movie (the higher the bit rate, the better quality the movie). Download PSP Video 9 from our Download Section.» Top Can I email my game saves to friends or upload them to a server/website/FTP site? Yes, you can take your game saves from the Memory Card and upload them to a webserver or email them. To do this, simply connect your PSP to a PC/Mac using a USB cable (Or you can use a card reader to directly read the Memory Card). Access the "SAVEDATA" folder, found in the "PSP" folder, and ZIP the game save that you want. Then upload it or email it!
» Top Can I play games from Japan or US on my European PSP? What about UMD movies? The PSP is multi-region so you are able to play games from around the world, although it is possible that not all games will work (so far, we have no evidence to prove this). There may be incompatibility issues with multi-player games when using copies from different regions. UMD Movies on the otherhand are not multi-region. If you own a European (PAL) PSP, you can only play region 2 UMD Movies, which means a PAL console can play JAP UMD movies, but not US, as US is Region 1. Please check the region code on the back of the case to ensure correct compatibility. » Top Can I play PlayStation 1 games on my PSP? In order to play PlayStation 1 games on your PSP, you must be running firmware version 3.00 or above. PSOne games for the PSP can be downloaded using a PS3 via the PlayStation Store or you can use the PlayStation Store for PC. You will a memory stick duo of size 512MB or above in order to download games onto your PSP. Please note that PS1 game discs cannot fit into the PSP's UMD slot. Trying will either damage your disk or the PSP. This should be obvious since the PS1 disc is much larger than a UMD disc. » Top How can I hide corrupted icons from the XMB? Homebrew game made for firmware 1.5 usually causes corrupted icons to appear under the Games Menu. The corrupted icons can be hidden by simply renaming the folders. This can be done by prefixing __SCE__ and %__SCE__ to the two folders. %__SCE__ should only be used for the game folder containing the % sign. Here is an example: We have two folders, iRShell and iRShell%, these should be renamed to __SCE__iRShell and %__SCE__iRShell, respectively. » Top How can I update the Flash version on my PSP? You cannot update the Flash version on your PSP yourself. Sony will release updated for Flash through future Firmware Updates. On the top right corner is the battery indicator along with the date and time. The power indicator light will blink when the battery is running low.» Top How do I connect my PSP to my stereo? To connect your PSP to an audio device, such as a stereo, all you require is a "headphone to phono" cable. Simply connect the headphone socket to your PSP and connect the phono end to your stereo, in the audio in port. To use this cablem your stereo must have a "audio in" port. Alternatively, you can connect it to an amplifier or speaker.» Top How do I convert UMD rips to ISO, CSO, DAX or EZIP? Some ripping applications dump a UMD as files instead of a ISO image, an example is UMD Tool. You can convert the files into an ISO, CSO, DAX or EZIP image using either UMDGen or Epsilon's EZIP Tool. UMDGen supports conversion to ISO, CSO and DAX. The Epsilon EZIP tool allows conversion from ISO to EZIP, but you cannot reverse the process. Please remember that ripping games is illegal unless you own the game. » Top How do I create my own PSP Magazine? To create your own PSP magazine, all you need is a photo editer like Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or Macromedia Fireworks. Just create a image sized 480p(W) by 272p(H). Do this several times to make multiple pages. It is a little time consuming but once you get used to the program, you will find that it becomes a lot easier. We use Macromedia Fireworks to create our magazines. The frames feature allows us to create multiple pages using just one file. The export feature allows each frame to be exported into seperate images to create a multi-page magazine. » Top To share a game with another PSP, your will need to obtain a game displaying the game sharing icon. To share a game, enable the Wi-Fi switch on the PSP you want to share the game from and on any PSP you want to share the game with. Browse to the game sharing option in the game you want to share and access the Game Sharing Icon on the other PSP(s) to search for the game.
When prompted, select the game available to share.
On the PSP that is sharing the game, accept the transfer and wait until the transfer is complete. Follow the instructions in the manual of the game to begin multi-player gaming!
» Top Firmware 1.00 to 1.50 Homebrew for Firmware 1.00 to 1.50 can be loaded directly from the PSP XMB. Homebrew games should be placed in the "PSP/GAMES" folder of the Memory Stick. Some games may require certain steps in order for the game to work, please see individual games for more details. Firmware 2.00 to 2.60 Homebrew om Firmware 2.00 to 2.60 can be loaded in two ways, either using the TIFF Exploit by loading a image from the XMB or by using the GTA Save Game Exploit. Both these methods allow the use of a EBOOT Loader that again loads games from the "PSP/GAMES" folder of the Memory Stick. Not all homebrew games are compatible with these firmware versions. Firmware 2.70 to 2.80 With Firmware 2.70 to 2.80, homebrew can be loaded using the TIFF Exploit. If you are using 2.80, there is no EBOOT loader available, and as such, only a limited number of games are available. If you use Firmware 2.71, you are able to load homebrew directly from the XMB using a hack. » Top To mute the sound on your PSP, press and hold down the 'AUDIO' button, found near the 'SELECT' button on your PSP. To restore audio, simply press again. » Top How do I play music on my PSP? For Firmware Versions < 2.8 Connect your PSP to a PC/Mac via USB cable. The PSP will show up as a removable drive. If you open the drive, you will see a folder named "PSP", open theis folder and create a folder called "MUSIC", if it doesn't already exist. Open the "MUSIC" folder and you can drag and drop MP3 files.
For Firmware Versions 2.8+ Connect your PSP to a PC/Mac via USB cable. The PSP will show up as a removable drive. If you open the drive, you will see a folder named "MUSIC", if it doesn't already exist create it. Open the "MUSIC" folder and you can drag and drop MP3 files.
Note: It is important that you make sure your files are saved as either MP3 or ATRAC, as the PSP will not recognize other file types (including WMA and OGG). » Top How do I put photos on to my PSP? For Firmware Versions < 2.80 You need to connect your PSP to your PC using a USB cable and activate the USB mode on your PSP (found under settings, second option from the top). Once connected, look inside the X:/PSP/PHOTOS folder (where X is your PSP Drive). Then all you have to do is drag and drop the photos into the folder! Once you exit the USB mode on your PSP, access the PHOTO menu from the PSP menu and you should see your photos there. Best size is 480w x x272h.
For Firmware Versions 2.80+ You need to connect your PSP to your PC using a USB cable and activate the USB mode on your PSP (found under settings, second option from the top). » Top How do I put the screen on sleep mode? To save power by putting the screen on 'sleep mode', simply press and hold the 'DISPLAY' button for 3 seconds. To restore the screen, simply press again. Its a good idea to not activate sleep mode while playing games and the game will continue to function but the screen will be blank. » Top How do I put videos onto my PSP? Videos must be encoded in MP4 format before they can be played on the PSP. Several software applications are available to convert videos into MP4 format. For Firmware Versions < 2.80 The videos should be copied to the "MP_ROOT" folder on the root of your Memory Stick Duo. If they were encoded in standard MP4 codec, put the videos in the 100MNV01 subfolder. The file should be named as M4VXXXXX.MP4, where X is a number. If the MP4 files were encoded in the H.264 codec, the videos should be places in the 100ANV01 subfolder. This file should be named as MAQXXXXX.MP4, where X is a number.
For Firmware Versions 2.80+ The videos should be copied into the "VIDEO" folder found on the root of your Memory Stick Duo. The files do not need to have a set name standard and both standard MP4 and H.264 files can exist in this folder.
» Top How do I read RSS News Feeds on my PSP? Although Sony's Native RSS reader can only access Music, Videos and Photos, you can however use the Internet Browser to read RSS News Feeds. Follow the instructions below to get yourself started:
Although the above example uses Google's RSS Reader, there are several RSS Readers accessible to the PSP. Have a look around on the net. » Top There are several homebrew applications available that allow you to rip UMDs to the memory stick or even to a PC. Our favorites are UMD Tool and UMD Net Ripper. Depending on the application you choose, the UMD will be dumped differently, for example, UMD Net Ripper uses Wi Fi to dump the UMD directly to your PC, while UMD Tool dumps it to the memory card. Please check the 'read me' files that come with your chosen application. Please remember that ripping games is illegal unless you own the game. » Top There are several ways to update your PSP, please check below:
» Top Skype can only be installed on the second-generation PSP (PSP-2000), and requires firmware 1.90, a Memory Stick Duo with 10MB free space and a Wi-Fi connection with Internet Access. Due to memory limitation in the first-generation PSPs (PSP-1000), Skype cannot be installed on these models. You can use your existing Skype account with the PSP or you can create a new one. To Start using Skype, go to [Network] > [Skype]. You will need to either enter your existing Skype details or create a new account to use the Skype service. Creating a new account is easy, and can be done by following the on-screen steps. If you create a new account using your PSP, you can use the account on other devices that support Skype. » Top How do I use the Internet Radio? Before you can use the Internet Radio, you must first download and install the application on your Memory Card. This can be done by going to the PSP Internet Radio website. Once installed, you can access the Internet Radio by going to [Network] > [Internet Radio Player]. You will need Wireless Internet Access to use the Internet Radio. » Top I cannot save bookmarks on my browser! To be able to save bookmarks, you must have the "SYSTEM" folder in your "PSP" folder. A quick way to correct this is to format your Memory Card, but remember to backup your data first! » Top Security Settings and Content Control You can restrict the PSP from playing UMD (movies or games) with a certain rating, for example, restrict children from playing games for over 12s. This can be done by accessing the Security Settings option from the Settings menu. The default code is 0000. Please remember that if you set the code and forget it, there is no way of resetting it.» Top What are the differences between Japanese, American and European PSPs? The US and European PSP bundle is exactly the same as the JAP bundle, except it comes with English instructions, demo disc, and a cleaning cloth. Depending on when and where you get your PSP, it might also have a different firmware version. New PSP consoles will have the latest firmware version available. The contents of the Demo Disk may also vary depending on time of purchase. Some people suggest that JAP PSPs have a better TFT Screen than US or European PSP, but this is not the case. Any TFT screen is just as likely to get dead/stuck pixels. » Top What does the Dynamic Normalizer setting do? What does the Dynamic Normalizer setting do? [Dynamic Normalizer] is a feature available in Firmware Version 3.10+. The [Dynamic Normalizer] feature provides automatic volume adjustment for playback of music tracks or other audio sources with varying output levels. » Top What happens if the battery dies or I need to turn the PSP off? The PSP has a hibernate mode, which saves your exact position when you turn off the console. When you turn on the console, you will be in the exact same position, whether in the PSP system menus, or actually playing a game. If your battery dies, all unsaved data will be lost. If the green power LED on your PSP is flashing, it is best to save your game, as this indicates low battery. To hibernate your PSP, simply push the power switch up for no more than 1 second. To turn off your PSP completely, hold the power switch up for 3 seconds. » Top What happens of I switch of my PSP or if the bettery dies during an update? This is a really stupid thing to do but it it happens by accident, your PSP will most likely be useless. Since the update is flashing files to your PSP, any interruption will halt this process and mean that all the files could not be copied. If crucial files were not copied, then the PSP will no longer function unless you can flash the PSP using a modchip.» Top A Custom Firmware is a firmware for the PSP made by someone other than Sony. Dark_AleX is well known for his Custom Firmwares, including 2.71 SE, 3.02 OE and 3.03 OE. Custom Firmwares are used as a replacement to the Sony Firmware, usually to add extra features or to remove security features in Sony's Firmwares. Installing a Custom Firmware can brick your PSP if instructions are not followed. » Top What is Bricking? What does it do to the PSP? Bricking occurs when some code is executed on the PSP that alters the Firmware to an unusable state (i.e. it formats the flash on the PSP). This means that the PSP will not function properly and therefore make the device unusable. Bricking in the PSP may occur when using homebrew that alters the flash, such as using downgraders, custom firmware and other flash altering programs. Current downgrader/daters are 2.0 to 1.5, 1.5 to 1.0, 2.5 and 2.6 to 1.5, 2.71 to 1.5, 2.80 to 1.5, 3.03 to 1.5. It is wise that if one comes across one of these so called downgraders to look for some form of proof. » Top Homebrew is a term frequently applied only to video games that are produced or "home-developed" by consumers on proprietary game platforms (like the PSP); in other words, game platforms that are not typically user-programmable. » Top What is meant my Downgrading a PSP? Downgrading a PSP means to change the installed Firmware to a lower version, for example, downgrading a Firmware 2.00 PSP to Firmware 1.50. Sony does not allow downgrading, however, various exploits have been found that allow selected firmware versions to be downgraded. Downgrading is a risky process if the instructions are not followed, and could brick your PSP. » Top What is the battery life for the PSP? The lithium-ion battery offers a play time of 4 to 7 hours for games, 3 to 5 hours for movies, and approx 10 hours for music. In order to get at least 6 hours for gaming, and 5 hours for movies, you will need to be using headphones with the volume turned down to less than half, the backlight turned down to the minimum setting, and the wireless LAN mode should be turned off. The PSP has many power-save options that should be configured correctly to ensure you get the most out of your battery. If you find that the standard battery isn't enough, you can purchase additional batteries or portable chargers from £15 - £35. » Top The PSP Giga-Pack is essentially the same as the inital PSP value pack, however a 1GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo is included, as well as other items. » Top What is the PSP directory structure on the Memory Stick Duo/PSP Memory Card? For Firmware Versions < 2.80 Most PSP's use the following directory structure. + PSP | - COMMON | + GAME | | - UPDATE | - MUSIC | - PHOTOS | - SAVEDATA | - SYSTEM + MP_ROOT For Firmware Versions 2.80+ Firmware versions 2.80 and above use the following directory structure. + PSP | - COMMON | + GAME | | - UPDATE | - SAVEDATA | - SYSTEM + MUSIC + PICTURE + VIDEO The 'PSP' directory is the main directory used by the PSP. The 'MP_ROOT' directory is where you should store any MP4 video files you want to view using your PSP, in a compatible format. The 'GAME' > 'UPDATE' directory is where any firmware updates should be stored as well as bonus levels or extras downloaded for a particular game.
The 'SAVEDATA' directory should not be altered in anyway, as it could cause you data to be corrupted, disabling you from loading your saved files correctly.
For Firmware Versions < 2.80 The 'MUSIC' and 'PHOTO' directories can be used to store music (ATRAC and MP3) and photo (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), respectively. You can use sub-directories to seperate the files as needed.

XMB stands for Cross Media Bar, and is a graphical interface that's shaped like a cross. Users of the interface move left and right to select between main category entries, then move up and down to select between sub categories. On the PSP, the main categories include "Settings", "Photos", "Music", "Videos", "Games" and "WWW". Subcategories for "Games" include the Game Sharing Feature, UMD, Memory Stick Contents and Games on the Memory Stick. » Top What Memory Card does my PSP support? The PSP supports any brand of Memory Stick Duo. It supports the standard Duo, Pro Duo, and Duo High Speed, with or without MagicGate technology. Currently the largest available size is 4GB (4000MB), with a 8GB (8000MB) card planned for the future. It is recommended to use either Sony or SanDisk Memory Sticks.» Top What type of files can I store on my memory stick? You can save any type of files you want to a memory stick. It really doesn't matter. However, remember that the PSP can only recognize/read certain formats stored in certain locations. It will ignore all other file types. PHOTO

The Base Pack includes only the PSP, the battery pack and AC charger. The Value Pack comes with everything you need to get started including everything from the Base Pack, plus 32MB Memory Stick Duo, Pouch, Cleaning Cloth, Headphones and Remote. The Giga Pack comes with everything fror the value pack, except the 32MB Memory Stick is replaced with a 1GB Memory Stick. The PSP Entertainment Pack (only available in certain territories) comes with everything from the PSP Giga Pack, but is bundled with movies that can be downloaded on to the Memory Stick. » Top What types of RSS feeds does the PSP support? With firmware version 2.70+, the PSP is able to download content via RSS feeds, although only certain formats are currently supported. The supported formats include images, video and music. Video and image support is available in firmware versions 2.80+ Firmware Version 2.60/2.70/2.71 You can only download MP3 content of you are using firmware version 2.70 or 2.71. Firmware Versions 2.80+ If you are using firmware 2.80, you are able to download music, videos and photos using RSS feeds. » Top When was the PSP released in Europe? The official European release date was September 1st, 2005.» Top When was the PSP released in Japan? The official Japanese release date was December 12th, 2004.» Top When was the PSP released in North America? The official North American release date was March 24th, 2005.» Top Why does my Internet Browser display a low memory error? Your browser will display a low memory error if your cache is full. To disable this error, simply disable the use of your cache by changing the settings. The disadvantage is that each page will need to be loaded as it will not be stored locally. You can increase the size of your cache, but in the end, it will cause the same problem. For the time being, it is best to disable cache. Hopefully Sony will release a fix for this error! If the error persists, you can manually empty the cache. The error normally occurs when you try to load a large page or image. Firmware 3.10+ On Firmware 3.10 and greater, you can enable the [Conserve Memory] option from the[View Settings] menu to prevent the Low Memory Error from occuring. The [Conserve Memory] option enables you to view a Web page that contains a larger amount of data because less memory is used to display the page. » Top |
